He was born in İzmir. He graduated from School of Medicine, Ege University, in 1981. Then, He worked at Experimental Surgery Center, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Yale University for 18 months.

Prof. Dr. Alp Gurkan is a well-known general surgeon as well as a transplant surgeon. He has more than 33 years in the field of organ transplant and general surgery. His area of interest lies in pancreas and liver transplants. He performed his first laparoscopic kidney procedure from a live donor in Turkey.
Pof Gurkan was the first to establish the kidney exchange transplant program in Turkey. He has around 200 publications in both local as well as international journals. He has 174 presentations at National and International congresses.
He has been author of various books and translators also.
