Laparoscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove uterine fibroids—benign tumors that grow in the uterus. This technique is particularly beneficial for women who wish to preserve their uterus and maintain fertility, offering an alternative to a traditional open surgery, which requires larger incisions.

During a laparoscopic myomectomy, the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen. Through these incisions, a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera and light) and specialized surgical instruments are inserted. The camera transmits images to a monitor, guiding the surgeon in precisely removing the fibroids from the uterine wall. The fibroids are then extracted through the small incisions, sometimes using a technique called morcellation, where the fibroids are broken into smaller pieces.

This procedure is favored for its benefits, which include reduced blood loss, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times compared to open surgery. Patients often experience significant relief from symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure after recovery.

However, not all fibroids can be removed laparoscopically, especially if they are very large or deeply embedded in the uterine wall. The surgeon will determine the best approach based on the size, location, and number of fibroids. Postoperative care typically involves pain management and monitoring for any signs of complications, with most women returning to normal activities within a few weeks.
