Professor Khurshid Akhtar, Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon, currently works within the Salford Royal Foundation Trust. He is highly specialised in the treatment of oesophageal issues, stomach cancer, reflux disorders, hiatus hernia, bariatric surgery, gall stones, and laparoscopic hernia surgery.
Prof Akhtar has worked as a consultant for over 20 years, initially starting his career within the Pennine Trust before starting his current role. His Department of Upper GI Surgery is currently one of the biggest units of its kind in the UK. He practises a very patient-focused method of care, believing that all patients have specific and individual needs, and thus require individualised treatment. He has had 1000s of happy patients throughout his years as a consultant.
Prof Akhtar is also an active researcher, he has a keen interest in esophagogastric cancer, Barrett's oesophagus and bariatric surgery. Additionally, he is a Fellow for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, as well as holding membership to several professional organisations including the Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britten and Ireland, the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britten and Ireland, the British Obesity & Metabolic Surgery Society, and the Manchester Regional Association of Surgeons (MRAS).
