He is renowned for being a pioneer in the surgical applications of tissue engineering, soft robotics, and transplantation. He sees private patients at the Nuffield Health Bristol and the Platinum Medical Centre in St Johns Wood.
Professor Birchall received his medical degree in 1984 from the University of Cambridge before completing basic and specialist training at University College Hospitals and other prestigious London hospitals. He was appointed consultant and entered the specialised registry in 1996.
Professor Birchall is a world pioneer in otolaryngology, leading a large research team that develops biomedical technologies to help treat and manage airway problems. He also co-led the team that performed the world's first stem cell-based organ transplant in 2008, and he was later part of the team that performed the world's second laryngeal transplant at UC Davis in California.
