Procedure

Treatment options for anal cancer in UAE are:

1. Surgery: Surgery is an option for early-stage anal cancer (Stage I and some Stage II cases). In local excision, the tumor and a small margin of healthy tissue are removed. It is less invasive and allows for a quicker recovery. However, in more advanced cases or when local excision is not suitable, abdominoperineal resection (APR) may be necessary. APR involves the removal of the anus, rectum, and part of the colon, often resulting in the creation of a permanent colostomy, where waste exits through a stoma in the abdominal wall.

2. Radiation Therapy: External beam radiation therapy is commonly used for anal cancer. It delivers high-energy X-rays to the tumor and surrounding areas. This treatment can be curative and is often combined with chemotherapy. Another approach is brachytherapy, where radioactive material is placed directly into or near the tumor.

3. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is typically administered concurrently with radiation therapy, known as chemoradiation. This combination is more effective than either treatment alone and is considered the standard of care. Common chemotherapy drugs for anal cancer include 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and mitomycin C. These drugs enhance the effects of radiation and target cancer cells.

4. Targeted Therapy: While not the primary treatment for anal cancer, ongoing research may identify promising targeted therapies for specific subtypes of the disease. Targeted therapy drugs are designed to target specific molecules or pathways involved in cancer growth.

5. Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy is an emerging field in cancer treatment, but it is not yet a standard option for anal cancer. Clinical trials may explore the use of immunotherapies to boost the body's immune response against cancer cells.

6. Palliative Care: Palliative care is crucial, especially for advanced-stage anal cancer. It focuses on improving the patient's quality of life by managing symptoms, pain, and treatment-related side effects. Palliative care teams work alongside oncologists to address physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
