Dr Maria Souvatzi is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon Hammersmith Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital with over 10 years of experience. She completed her medical degree at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2004 and subsequently pursued full specialist training in general surgery before relocating to the United Kingdom. She also holds a Master’s degree in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery from Democritus University of Thrace, along with a recent Postgraduate Diploma in Coloproctology from the University of East Anglia. Dr Souvatzi is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
After relocating to the UK, Dr Souvatzi undertook two advanced colorectal surgery fellowships. The first took place at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where she received specialised training in primary colorectal cancer with both minimally invasive and open surgery, surgery for peritoneal metastases involving cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and surgical treatment of locally advanced/recurrent pelvic cancer, including pelvic exenteration and sacrectomy.
Her second advanced colorectal fellowship occurred at St Mark’s National Bowel Hospital and Academic Institute, covering the assessment, investigation, and treatment of pelvic floor disorders, as well as the surgical and multidisciplinary management of complex abdomens and intestinal failure.
Following this rigorous specialist training, Dr Souvatzi was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon in 2019 at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Alongside her role as a consultant, she also serves as clinical governance lead, actively promoting best practices and ensures patient safety within the general surgery department.
