This procedure involves inserting a catheter with a small balloon at its tip into the narrowed artery. Once in place, the balloon is inflated to widen the artery, improving blood flow to the heart. Often, a stent (a small wire mesh tube) is placed to keep the artery open. PTCA is commonly used to treat coronary artery disease and prevent heart attacks.
