Dr. Deshpande started his career at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in 1982. He returned to Tata Memorial Hospital in 1985 and worked there till 2002 as the Chief of Thoracic Services. He is currently the Head of Surgical Oncology at the S. L. Raheja Hospital (now known as Asian Institute of Oncology), and is the executive vice chairman. He has also been a consultant oncologist at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai.
